Monday Rolls Round Again

Well, it’s time for another Monday here at Circadian Diurnal Supply. After last Monday’s debacle, we are trying out a new Monday, fresh out of school and eager to please. Two of its references didn’t call us back, but the others seemed to think we’d be a good place for Monday. So, here we are. A fresh start to the week. Let us know how our new Monday does:

I have a complicated history with Mondays. While I’ve never had a bona fide case of “the Mondays” — largely because anyone who has ever attempted to diagnose me as having that particular malady has met with a most unfortunate fate — I do not relish dragging myself to work after several days of embracing my inner slacker. That I have to don a tie only serves to make the whole experience a lot more unpleasant.

The evidence relative to this particular Monday is pretty evenly balanced.

Unlike most Mondays, this one is only three days from the next weekend instead of the requisite four. Granted, this is largely thanks to the efforts of this Friday, but the 4th has enough good karma to go around that it can spare some for its ne’er-do-well cousin, Monday.

First thing this morning, however, this Monday is trying to kill my girlfriend’s cat. He’s in the early stages of respiratory distress and is going in for a chest tap either later today or early tomorrow. (The cat, not Monday. I have no knowledge of the pulmonary condition of Monday.)

Fortunately for this particular Monday, my boss is on vacation. And not just a one-day, long-weekend vacation-in-name-only, but a real, left-early-on-Friday, driving-out-of-state, taking-the-week-off, see-you-after-the-holiday vacation.

And unfortunately for this particular Monday, I have a backlog of work stacked a foot high on the corner of my desk.

Bottom line: Both the lack of a boss and the proximity to the weekend weigh greatly in this Monday’s favor, but the cat thing settles it for me and it isn’t even 10:00 a.m. here. Fire Monday, preferably before lunchtime.

Monday seemingly has caused 90% of the stupid population to cross paths with me today; the 2 teenage girls who thought it would be a good idea to dart across 4 lanes of traffic so that I might almost kill them, the tractor-trailer driver who decided to make a U-turn at a residential intersection, and the the 5 people who believe that stop signs are only suggestions.

Fortunately Monday has arranged for the rest of the afternoon to have me sitting in an air conditioned room trying to make the CNC follow the pre-drawn curves in the correct order.

Its nice to see Monday capitalize on the failings of last week, instead of bogging us down more. You’re doing great, just keep it up another week and you’ll be a shoe in for that promotion.

Failing to wake me up on time so I could make coffee for my morning work routine was a black mark to you, Monday.

Fortunately, having my wife call earlier than expected today from the UK just when I was feeling down has balanced it out.

What can you do to pull out the win?

Monday had been quite inoffensive so far. Unlike its predecessor, it has so far failed to spit in my face in any big way. Yes, it did forget to pack my lunch, but then, so did Sunday night, and Sunday got away with it. Monday has finished a big task I’ve been working on for weeks, and brought me some much-needed progress on another project. Monday has also brought diet-busting carrot cake to my lab, but so far hasn’t forced me to eat any. And Monday has a yummy meal waiting in the crockpot for when I get home. Barring any sneaky “wait until she votes to keep and then screw ‘er” tricks like last Thursday pulled, I’m going to say we should keep Monday around. It’s shaping up to be a team player, even if it could use a little fine-tuning.

Monday’s done alright, but Monday could use some work. First of all, thanks to a cat-caused furniture malfunction, the alarm didn’t go off quite like I liked, and then the Comcast technician didn’t show up until the better part of an hour late, and it took two more hours of waiting for the job to actually get done. Comcast can blow me.

    Overall, meh. Needs work.

Monday, you were doing fine flying under my radar.

Then, you hit me with a horrible rotting-food smell from the fridge, followed up with a nasty migraine. While I’ll forgive you the bad food - that’s a coworker’s idiocy and not yours - I hold you personally accountable for the migraine.

You can stay, but consider yourself on double-secret probation.
